1. Safety first, be sure to wear protective equipment when handling saws and other hand tools and chemicals.
2. Choose the bamboo or PVC. Note, the length and diameter can change the sound quality so experiment with different sizes. And choose a piece that feels comfortable in your hand.
3. Bamboo is a delicate wood. You may want to apply tape around the area you intend to cut the bamboo to protect from tearing.
4. Suppress your bamboo / PVC to prevent twisting and cutting, then a half ago with a saw blade cut to desired length.
5. Remove the tape.
6. If the use of bamboo, emptying the inside with a long drill bit or metal bars.
7. For bamboo, cut easily with a round file. For PVC, can smooth the rough edges (de-bur), using a sharp knife, in a backward movement similar to peeling a potato peel.
8. Using a drill bit the same diameter as the wooden skewers, drill 2 rows of holes in the bamboo or PVC, about an inch apart. You must clear any type of PVC powder and / or chips and dispose of properly
9. For bamboo, apply some wood glue to the skewers and feed them through the bamboo. Let dry.
10. Because PVC is a little trickier. The PVC is glued with HH-66 vinyl cement. With a soft cloth, apply sufficient MEK to the wetland area to be glued PVC. This hinders the PVC surface and allows the cement to adhere vynel better. Allow this to dry completely.
11. Brush two or three layers of vinyl cement diluted with 10% acetone, allowing each coat to dry to the touch. Make sure the entire area is covered is attached. Insert the skewers. There should be a better fit. Using the heat gun, apply heat to reactivate the glue.
12. After the glue has dried, with a sharp knife, cut the ends of the spikes that come out of one side of the bamboo. Sandy by sharp or ragged edges
13. Cut two pieces of wood to be used as plugs either end of the bamboo. Glue one in place, and let dry.
14. Fill about 1 / 5 of the length of bamboo with your filler.
15. Paste the second round of wood or cork in the open end and let dry.
16. Stain or paint the rain stick and add decorative trim.
17. Remember, PVC needs special handling. You need to use a paint specifically for plastics. You may also want to scrape the areas you want to decorate with sandpaper and the MEK / acetone treatment described above
